Quoting Rodney Cutler from Esquire: 'Personal space is a space too often ignored by men. It contains you and, if you're lucky, another person of your choosing.' To this end it's important to not only smell your best but also to smell distinctive.
A cologne isn't the sort of thing to just by the latest release of, you need to find a scent that suits your own personality and your own natural fragrance. To that end my recommendations are suggestions only, but there are a few helpful rules that you can apply:
1. Liking the smell of something isn't automatically the same as something smelling good on you. Ask the store assistants for help, they tend to be honest about what works and what doesn't.
2. Wear light, citrus tones during the day, and more complex, warm tones at night. Going into the evening however, never mix without first washing.
3. Use a deodorant that compliments your cologne, if this sounds a bit complicated, use the same brand of deodorant as your cologne.
Some Particular favourites of mine:
Lacoste 'Red'
Very light and crisp while also deceptively complex. Not for everyone, but on the right person very evocative of youth and boyishness.
Burberry 'Brit'
Dark, complex and woody while still remaining bold. This is the cologne for winter nights out in the cold.
Something a bit different, this company has been in business since 1792, and their Number 6 can claim George Washington, a seminal gentleman, as a convert.
Notes of Orange Blossom and Rosemary. To be worn while defending liberty.
